What the federal budget function "National Defense" covers: Department of Defense military spending (pay, operations and maintenance, weapons procurement, research and construction), the Department of Energy's nuclear-weapons programs, and smaller defense activities of other agencies.
In FY2026 through August 2026, the share was 12.6% ($876.2 billion so far). Shares are of the sum of all budget functions with positive outlays, the same base as our federal budget pie chart and the tax calculator.
