Where it goes

Customs duties go into the Treasury's general fund with income taxes and other receipts; they are not earmarked for particular programs. Federal spending is far larger: in FY2025 customs covered about 2.8% of outlays. See the federal deficit and where the money is spent.

Questions and answers

How much money has the US collected from tariffs?
$194.9 billion in customs duties in fiscal year 2025 (October 2024 to September 2025), up from $77.0 billion in FY2024. In FY2026 through August 2026 the Treasury collected $292.5 billion in customs duties and refunded $125.2 billion, leaving $167.3 billion net.
How much tariff revenue in 2026?
In FY2026 through August 2026 the Treasury collected $292.5 billion in customs duties and refunded $125.2 billion, leaving $167.3 billion net.
How much do tariffs bring in per month?
Gross duties were $23.4 billion in August 2026, with $10.5 billion refunded. The monthly table above has every month.
Why were customs receipts negative in some months?
The monthly statement records refunds against collections. In May 2026, June 2026, July 2026 refunds were larger than the duties collected that month, so net customs receipts were below zero. The statement does not say which tariffs were refunded.
Who pays tariffs?
The importer of record pays the duty to U.S. Customs and Border Protection when goods enter the country. Whether the cost is passed on to buyers or absorbed by sellers is an economic question this data does not answer.
How much tariff revenue comes from each country?
The Treasury reports customs duties as one total. Duties by country of origin are published in trade statistics (the U.S. International Trade Commission's DataWeb), not in the federal accounts used here.
How big are tariffs compared with other taxes?
3.7% of all federal receipts in FY2025. Individual income taxes are by far the largest source; see where federal revenue comes from.
