What this counts

The federal share of Medicaid: grants to states that pay part of what each state's Medicaid program spends on health care and long-term care. States pay the rest of the cost, and the state share is not in these figures. The Children's Health Insurance Program is a separate account.

Figures are net outlays: payments made, minus any offsetting collections credited to the same accounts, as printed in the Monthly Treasury Statement. They are not adjusted for inflation. In the budget-function view it falls under health care and Medicaid.
