How this calculator works
This calculator estimates your 2026 federal income tax and shows how it splits across federal government spending by function, using the latest year Statistics Canada has classified, 2024-25. Its figures are compiled from the Public Accounts of Canada.
How the tax is estimated: the 2026 federal brackets (14% up to $58,523, then 20.5%, 26%, 29% and 33%), less the basic personal amount credit ($16,452, falling to $14,829 for higher incomes) at 14%. Provincial and territorial income tax is not included because it funds provincial budgets. CPP and EI contributions, other credits, and GST are also not included.
Worked example: taxable income of $70,000 gives about $8,243 in federal income tax. Social protection took 36.0% of federal expense, which is $2,967 of that. General public services include interest on the public debt.
The spending figures: federal government expense by function (CCOFOG), excluding capital acquisitions came to $519.7 billion in fiscal year 2024-25 (April to March), in 10 functions. The five largest took 87.1% of the total, and the smallest, housing and community amenities, took 1.18%. Every share in the table is that function's amount divided by the total, and the amounts are CAD as published in the source below.
