What this covers
What the federal budget function "Net Interest" covers: Interest the Treasury pays on federal debt held by the public, less interest the government receives. Interest paid between government accounts (for example to the Social Security trust funds) cancels out.
In FY2026 through August 2026, the share was 14.6% ($1.02 trillion so far). Shares are of the sum of all budget functions with positive outlays, the same base as our federal budget pie chart and the tax calculator.
