What the 2026 COLA means for your check

Your monthly benefit from January 2026

About $56.00 more a month, or $672 over a year, from the 2.8% COLA.

An estimate. SSA applies the COLA to your primary insurance amount and rounds down to the dime, then rounds the payment down to the dollar; Medicare Part B premiums deducted from the check also change each January. Your SSA letter shows the exact amount.

How the COLA is set

The COLA equals the rise in the consumer price index for urban wage earners and clerical workers (CPI-W) from the July–September average of the previous year to the July–September average of this year, rounded to the nearest tenth of a percent. For 2026: the third-quarter 2025 average CPI-W was 317.265, 2.8% above 308.729 a year earlier (SSA). If prices do not rise there is no COLA: benefits did not increase in 2010, 2011 or 2016.
